While boarding the Pigeon Crumbs animatic I posted a few weeks ago I drew these reference sketches and character models to help me figure out how the character would look, feel and act.

Pigeon Crumbs – Animatic
Recently I’ve been working on an storyboard about a pigeon who finds the mother of all crumbs, but discovers eating it isn’t all that simple. Here’s the result! Based on a true story … Sound effects copyright BBC
Bird Gestures
I’m currently boarding a short idea featuring a pigeon, so I thought I’d put in some bird gesture practice! These are a mix of 30- and 60-second drawings. I want to practice wings more, and really get to grips with how they work.
Animal Gestures
Some quick studies from Line of Action – a mix of 30- and 60-second sketches.
Animals at Kelvingrove
Yesterday I had a wander around Glasgow’s West End with some friends from the course. While they had a look round the various exhibits at Kelvingrove I sat and drew some of the stuffed animals. Here are some of the best / least creepy sketches … I think the penguins and the leopard have theContinue reading “Animals at Kelvingrove”
Swan
A little something I made yesterday!
Afternoon at the Museum
I spent part of yesterday afternoon sketching at the museum with a friend. I think having another person there helped me to draw much more than I do normally, alone! The animals all had great personalities and it was fun trying to bring them to life. These are all from the National Museum of ScotlandContinue reading “Afternoon at the Museum”
30 Second Bird Sketches
I wanted to loosen up a bit so I went to artists.pixelovely.com and spent about 20 minutes drawing 30 second bird poses. Here are my favourites!
30-Second Menagerie
Here are some 30-second animal sketches! I’m drawing a lot more very short poses and it’s fun. Plus it helps with the longer poses. Here are some slightly longer 2-minute poses.
Bird Animation – Development
For a while I’ve been scribbling down ideas for this bird project. This weekend I began to do some more research into the location and character design. Here are some of my sketchbook pages! These were all sketched using Zig Clean Color Real Brush pens by Kuretake. I like how they give a good variationContinue reading “Bird Animation – Development”
Blast from the Past
I have been clearing out my room (this seems to be a permanent occupation) and recycling old schoolwork, university work, articles, and old drawings and stories by me that just aren’t worth keeping anymore. While doing that, I found these: Peter, my family’s first budgie. Oliver and Twist were our third and fourth budgies (ofContinue reading “Blast from the Past”
Short Animation Idea
I have an idea for a short 2D animation, drawn and painted in my rough sketchy style. I drew this test one morning last week – it was great to sit down at an animation desk and draw. As I don’t have an easy way to linetest traditional animation at home, I just went forContinue reading “Short Animation Idea”
Birdy
This little guy appeared while I played with Kyle T. Webster’s great gouache photoshop brushes today.
Old Drawings
This is one of the first sketches I did for the fire in “Dreid”, my VFS classical animation. (You can find the film in “Shorts”.) I took a picture of the sketch when I had to throw the sketchbook it was in away, and I only found the picture this weekend. This little bird was inContinue reading “Old Drawings”
Budgie
Today’s quick doodle. I want to try and get away from relying on my sketch lines. I’m finding it difficult to translate them into finished, clean lines!
Gouache II
I had fun painting with gouache last night! I bought three more tubes of paint as last time I only had yellow, red, and blue. Also I planned ahead a bit more, taking some designs from my sketchbook to paint instead of attempting to make them up on the spot.
