Here’s a glimpse from my office window. Sometimes the view is so beautiful I take pictures instead of working …

Glencoe
It’s been over a year since I last updated my portfolio and showreel so (thanks to the prodding of others) I’m finally sorting through my work. In doing so I uncovered this painting of Glencoe. From what I remember I abandoned it in frustration, but I quite like it now! It’s loosely based on aContinue reading “Glencoe”
Pieces of Sky #19 & #20
I had an amazing time in LA, but didn’t draw the sky because it always looked like this. There were no clouds, there was no rain, there was nothing but sunshine. Returning to Scotland was a bit of a shock. It’s cold, wet and grey. But our sky is much more interesting.
Pieces of Sky #16
Now my computer is feeling better I want to get back in the habit of posting these! There was a lovely sunset outside my window, and as I began to draw another plane flew past leaving a bright orange trail. I find I’m struggling to get the orange parts as bright as I want withoutContinue reading “Pieces of Sky #16”
Pieces of Sky #14
Quick pencil study.
Pieces of Sky #13
Again, lots of cloud – but this time I’ve tried painting it a bit differently.
Pieces of Sky #12
Some sunshine, some cloud.
Pieces of Sky #11
Light shining through clouds. Very cloudy, but little rain. Using my iPhone I often create slow-motion videos, but this is the first time I’ve tried time-lapse: you can see the result below!
Pieces of Sky #10
I was ready to paint a glorious square of blue. Then I saw how light from the city was glowing in the clouds.
Pieces of Sky #9
We had some sunshine today, but the day was cold. Autumn has come!
Pieces of Sky #8
Clouds clouds clouds. And lots of rain.
Pieces of Sky #6
One thing I’m hoping to take from this project is that I become extremely good at painting clouds.
Pieces of Sky #5
As the sun set it seemed to merge into some of the clouds.
Pieces of Sky #4
Sunshine today, and clouds that evaporated more quickly than I could draw them!
Pieces of Sky #3
It was very cloudy today, but from time to time blue sky poked through!
Pieces of Sky #2
I paid more attention to the sky today. Though most of the time it was completely cloudy, there was one moment when the cloud thinned just enough for the sun to be seen as a white disc. This one I drew on my phone, using an app called Sketch Club!
Pieces of Sky #1
I love looking at the sky and seeing how different it appears every day and night. For a while I’ve been wondering about doing quick little colour studies of what a piece of sky has looked like, and today I managed to sketch one! After a bright, clear day heat haze fell. Now it’s reflectingContinue reading “Pieces of Sky #1”
Landscape 01
I’d like to get into the habit of drawing daily so I’ve come up with a list of short exercises to do, one each day. Today’s was a landscape study. Mountain landscape 478216 from http://wallpaper-kid.com/mountain-landscape-backgrounds.htm I did a B&W study first to try and understand the tones in the photograph. In my sketch it’s difficultContinue reading “Landscape 01”
