A few weeks ago I began working as a character and storyboard artist on an animated feature film called Spiked. I’ve been drawing a lot but of course I’m not able to share what I’m working on yet, so here’s a little doodle I drew today!
I liked this bust of George Roberts, Provost of Selkirk in the 1800s, and had to draw it.
There’s a little maple tree outside my window in the new house. At the beginning of the year when we had quite a lot of snow I did a quick study of it because I loved the way the snow blobbed around the branches. A couple of weeks ago, I did another study. It’s funContinue reading “Tree Seasons”
Yesterday I sketched Elsa as she chewed on a toy. Occasionally she’d bring it over to me and dump it at my feet before retreating across the room to stare at me. She usually wore an accusing look at this point – “What, you haven’t thrown it yet?” I’m a bit unsure about my painting below; it’sContinue reading “Intense Elsa”
There’s been idea in my head that I’ve wanted to storyboard for a while. I’ve begun drawing thumbnails, but before going any further today I decided to get down some rough character designs. A dog features in this story, specifically a Border Collie, so I did some very loose drawings inspired by my own dogContinue reading “Collie Character”
It’s been over a year since I last updated my portfolio and showreel so (thanks to the prodding of others) I’m finally sorting through my work. In doing so I uncovered this painting of Glencoe. From what I remember I abandoned it in frustration, but I quite like it now! It’s loosely based on aContinue reading “Glencoe”
Today I attempted some gesture drawing from an episode of The Life of Birds. As I reached the end of Planet Earth II last year I realised I really should have had my sketchbook out. It’s good training for cafe gesture drawing, which I’m normally pretty hopeless at. As soon as people or animals are actually moving myContinue reading “The Life of Birds”
Some more gestures from the other day. The hands and feet were all 30 second poses, the figures were all one minute poses.
Haven’t drawn much in the last few days, so I spent some of my morning doing timed sketches from artists.pixelovely.com – a great site for gesture practice. These were 30 second drawings.
Some wind-down sketches from this afternoon. Also, the first little bit has been released about the project I’ve been working on for the last eight weeks. I’ve been a Story Artist on the Animation Base Camp, a trainee programme with mentorship from Sony Pictures Animation. Find out more here!
Some 30-second digital sketches. I decided to practice as I’ve been struggling to draw the hands in my storyboards. These are the ones I liked best!
I’m illustrating a short story of mine, something I’ve wanted to do for a while! Here are some of the concept sketches. I’ll use a similar style for the finished pieces; I didn’t initially plan for them to be black and white but I love how these have turned out.
In preparation for my Christmas painting I sketched some babies from a Google search. Using these, I drew a rough sketch of baby Jesus. Then I cleaned the drawing up in preparation for painting. I initially planned to paint the entire image, but it was Christmas Eve and I ran out of time!
A surprisingly clear evening!
I love looking at the sky and seeing how different it appears every day and night. For a while I’ve been wondering about doing quick little colour studies of what a piece of sky has looked like, and today I managed to sketch one! After a bright, clear day heat haze fell. Now it’s reflectingContinue reading “Pieces of Sky #1”
I now have a Tumblr and a Facebook Page! Here’s a new profile picture to celebrate.
I’ve been going along to several events at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this week. As part of the EIFF’s Youth Hub events I took part in a filmmaking competition. Each entry had to be made in under a week, and include the dialogue “young and the wild” and the prop of a mobile phone.Continue reading “Create”
Clearing through my files today I found this sketch I did in Vancouver. It was a nice warm day so I went to the beach to doodle and draw. Today Edinburgh is cold and rainy and feels more like February than June, so I coloured my old sketch to remind me of warmer days …
When I drew my previous profile picture back in February (!) I thought I’d try drawing a new one each month. Let’s see if I can get the next one done by December …
