Inktober is an annual drawing challenge which I’ve taken part in before, but this year I’ve decided to do it a little differently. As the name suggests the drawings are supposed to be in ink, but this year I’m going to cheat and draw digitally. My aim with this challenge is to develop my characterContinue reading “Inktober 2018 #01 – Elsa”

Giraffe
This is a little ink illustration I drew for a friend’s birthday card. I coloured it in Photoshop, but I think I prefer it in black and white.
Doodle Dump
One of the good things about taking the train is getting the chance to doodle away. Here are a few drawings from a recent trip. Mostly I just scribble, but the first group below are some characters from an old story of mine. I’ve been wondering about storyboarding the idea, or developing it further inContinue reading “Doodle Dump”
New Profile Picture
It’s almost 2018 … and definitely time to update my profile image!
Inktober #2
See my previous Inktober post here. Here are the rest of my Inktober drawings for this year. I missed a couple of days, but otherwise I’m pleased with what I’ve accomplished. Ink can be very unforgiving, even with a pencil underdrawing. It’s been good to try something new and learn by trial and error …
Inktober #1
I’ve been taking part in Inktober – a challenge to do one ink drawing every day of October. They’ve all been posted on my Twitter but I’m just now getting round to posting them here. I haven’t followed the official prompts; instead I’m drawing costumes through the years referencing John Peacock’s fantastic book Costume: 1066 to theContinue reading “Inktober #1”

Bob
Last week my laptop had to go in for repair, so I’ve had to do without a computer for the last few days. It’s been frustrating, given how much I use one! Perhaps it’s good to get a break once in a while. I haven’t been able to edit and post my drawings until now,Continue reading “Bob”
Vases
This morning I attended the fantastic Animation Masterclass with Ronnie del Carmen (@paperbiscuit on Twitter) at the EIFF Youth Hub. He spoke about the creation of Pixar’s “Inside Out” (which I have not yet seen, but am very much looking forward to) and emphasised how important it is to “Make stuff. Show it. Get feedback.” FeelingContinue reading “Vases”
Jericho Beach
Clearing through my files today I found this sketch I did in Vancouver. It was a nice warm day so I went to the beach to doodle and draw. Today Edinburgh is cold and rainy and feels more like February than June, so I coloured my old sketch to remind me of warmer days …
Life Drawing, 26th
After a long absence I finally made it to life drawing again! Here are a few sketches from the night.
Bird Animation – Development
For a while I’ve been scribbling down ideas for this bird project. This weekend I began to do some more research into the location and character design. Here are some of my sketchbook pages! These were all sketched using Zig Clean Color Real Brush pens by Kuretake. I like how they give a good variationContinue reading “Bird Animation – Development”
Profile
I decided I needed a new profile picture and thought I’d draw one! This is referenced from a photograph my sister took.
Sketches from The Sound of Music
I love this movie. I’ve seen lots of sketches from other people who’ve doodled through films, and I’ve always wondered how they can do that. Well, now I’ve tried it I see the appeal! I loved capturing the lighting in the central drawing, and trying to catch likeness while the shot remained on screen (withContinue reading “Sketches from The Sound of Music”
Kelpie Sketch Dailies
Kelpies feature in many Scottish myths, though similar creatures can be found in other cultures under different names. Unpleasant in nature, they trick their victims and then drown and eat them. I’ve been writing a story about a kelpie and when the challenge of drawing one came up I had to take part!
Costume Drawing
I recently discovered that the gallery in town hosts free drawing events, so this Thursday I went along to take a look. I got the chance to sketch a figure in costume, something that was remarkably tricky to do! I guess I’m used to unclothed figures … These were drawn using a Micron pen. ThenContinue reading “Costume Drawing”
