More studies from the Bodies in Motion website! I began with some 30 second sketches, all of which were very rough so I haven’t uploaded any of them. Next I went through one of the motions spending a minute on every drawing. Finally I spent quite a long time on a study of one image.

The gif below is a bit jumpy because I was only drawing every third photo, but I think there’s still a good sense of the overall movement.Ballet_0101

David modelled on Tuesday, holding some incredible poses that were often incredibly challenging to draw! It was a good session.

I went back to conte pastel for last week’s session – I think shaking up the medium every so often helps to keep things fresh! First-time model Silvi held some great poses.

Bren modelled at life drawing on Tuesday. I enjoyed the variety of poses, and even drew part of the room using the mirror in the final drawing.

Last week I had a good life drawing session with lots of dynamic and interesting poses. I drew in conte pastel for the first half, which was an attempt to shake me up a bit and loosen my drawings. Though everything felt a bit messy I think it was good as an exercise. I’ve noticed I’m getting much slower: I need to get back in the habit of regular gesture drawing to counteract this!

My first drawing session after Christmas, and I was quite rusty … it took me a while to warm up. We had a break just as I was beginning to feel I could draw again!

What with packing up and moving across most of the country and Christmas and New Year, it’s taken me a while to post some of my life drawing sketches from December. Here’s a selection!

Moving for work has meant I’ve had to search for another life drawing class … thankfully this last week I found one! It’s a great little group and the model this week, Helen, came up with some lovely poses. It’ll be good to get back into regular classes again.

It was the final life drawing session last week, modelled by Ina. I’ll miss the weekly sketching, but hopefully this will push me to draw more the rest of the time.

I had another great session of life drawing at The Haining with model Jacque on Tuesday.

A simple companion piece to my Good Friday image, celebrating Christ’s resurrection.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-10

Today I attempted some gesture drawing from an episode of The Life of Birds. As I reached the end of Planet Earth II last year I realised I really should have had my sketchbook out. It’s good training for cafe gesture drawing, which I’m normally pretty hopeless at. As soon as people or animals are actually moving my drawing speed seems to slow down.

I stuck my headphones in and ended up listening to the episode too, which was perhaps a mistake – I was definitely distracted at points. But it was fascinating learning more about the birds, particularly the New Zealand birds. I liked drawing the Kiwi but it was the flightless parrot, the Kakapo, which was my favourite. I especially like how the males inflate like a balloon in order to make their calls travel further.

After the episode had finished I looked up a few images online and did a slightly more detailed study of a Kakapo.

I had great fun but I think I need to work at drawing birds in flight, and practice colour more – I’ve been drawing in black and white so much I’m a bit rusty.

After being in Glasgow for almost a whole month (!) I made it along to life drawing at the ATYN here on Monday. The location and the models were great, but I missed having short poses after the break! I felt I fiddled with my drawings too much during the longer poses. Hopefully I’ll have the chance to go along again.

I’ve not been too good at uploading my drawings recently. Here are a few sketches from the last few weeks of life drawing!

I made it along to the class on Tuesday and did a little better this time, though I’m still struggling with the confidence in some lines. More practice needed!01

Here are a few drawings from the last life drawing session I was at. I had an off night and produced very little I’m pleased with. The foot finally made sense the third time I drew it!

Shockingly, I haven’t been to life drawing since November! I felt a bit rusty, but it was a good session.

07 On Tuesday I made it back to the life drawing class. I’m pleased with some of the drawings I did, especially the one above, as I feel I loosened up a lot and let the lines flow. 01 02 03 05 06 08
