As I look back at 2024 one of my regrets is failing to continue designing The Wait – and other personal projects. The Wait is a mini graphic novel I’ve been working at for a long while now. Back when Sputnik: Faith + Arts gave me a small grant to work on character design I very confidently stated it would be finished within two years.
Though those two years have now been and gone, it’s not without any progress. I’ve been reluctant to share the images below because they’re explorations, unfinished and in some cases quite difficult for me to look at. Yet I think my unwillingness to share them is a reflection of my struggle to take the project further.
So in 2025 my goal is to continue designing The Wait and (perhaps more importantly?) to share my work on this and other personal projects!
Most of the sketches above are exploring the costumes and costume changes over the years for different characters. I’ve also spent some time thinking about hands and how they impact the designs.
The final image is a colour and paint test. I’m not yet happy with how the final line and colour looks.
