If you follow me on Twitter (X) or Instagram you may have already seen some of these drawings. For NarniaWeb‘s We Love Narnia event the site encouraged fans of Narnia to share posts, drawings, and photos across social media. I decided to create illustrations based on the prompts for each day.
Day 1: How did you become a fan of Narnia?
Around the age of 8 I read my mum’s copy of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I was (and remain) an avid reader, but Narnia was special because it was the first time a world in a book became utterly real.
Day 2: Favourite Book
Over the years I’ve gone back and forth on which book is my favourite, but The Horse and His Boy has taken the top spot for a while. It’s a wonderful adventure, with horses! What more do you need?
Day 3: Favourite Film
Andrew Adamson’s The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe is an incredibly special film to me. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it! It’s hard to believe it released nearly 20 years ago …
Day 4: Favourite Character
There are a lot of characters I could have picked here, but because some of the others feature on other days I decided to go with Tirian. I’ve always admired his resilience.
Day 5: Favourite Scene
There really are too many to choose from, but I decided to draw Puddleglum putting out the fire from The Silver Chair.
Day 6: Favourite Quote
“[…] the smell of the sea and long miles of bluish-green waves breaking for ever and ever on the beach. And oh, the cry of the sea-gulls! Have you heard it? Can you remember?”
Day 7: Favourite Friendship
I love how Reepicheep reaches out to Eustace. I’m sure Eustace would have invited Reepicheep along on a flight!
Day 8: Favourite Hero
The heroes of Narnia aren’t always those who bear weapons: the series is full of quietly heroic characters, like Trufflehunter, who I imagine can make an excellent cup of tea.
Day 9: Favourite Aslan Moment
I decided to pick the moment in The Magician’s Nephew when Digory looks up at Aslan and sees tears in the lion’s eyes.
Day 10: The Magician’s Nephew 70th Anniversary
Though I didn’t finish it on time, I thought drawing the wood between the worlds was a perfect way to end this series. My drawing is heavily inspired by the work of Cartoon Saloon – I’d still love to see how they would adapt a story from Narnia!
I don’t often draw fanart (you can see the last time I drew fanart of Narnia here) but I’ve enjoyed figuring out how to illustrate various scenes from the books. I’ve also had a lot of fun playing with colour!
Brilliant work Amanda. Subtle but expressive drawings and colours.
